Spring 2025: What has been happening in SLES

Incursion Visit: Tailored Workforce

On 8 September, we had a visit from John and Van from Tailored Workforce. The meeting lasted about an hour, with some of us staying a little longer for 1:1 chats. They spoke about employment options, modified job opportunities, and shared really useful information about preparing for work. It was a big and informative session.

Laurels Training Excursion

On Wednesday, 24 September, we went to an RTO training facility where a trainer ran some hands-on sessions with us. We learned about PPE, health services, aged care, and first aid/CPR. It was so much fun! We even got to experience taking care of a fake person on a bed as part of a simulated aged care setting. It was such a great experience and really opened our eyes to another possible career path. To top it off, we were treated to pizza and hot chocolate, which made the day even better!

Melbourne Film Festival Excursion

The Melbourne Film Festival was really good and lots of fun! We caught the train and tram into the city, which was nice and relaxing. This excursion was also part of our practical assessment for the unit ‘Participate in Travel Activities.’ We were assessed on our ability to read timetables, navigate maps around the city, travel from point A to B, and work together as a team.

The event ran for about two hours and fifteen minutes, and the theatre was almost full. We watched a variety of short films made by people with disabilities, each showing different perspectives. Some were funny, some emotional, and others thought-provoking, it was an amazing and eye-opening experience. Some were really interesting, others were sad, but all of them gave us a deeper understanding of how differently people see the world. For people who don’t always have a voice or representation, their creativity and perspective were truly inspiring. Lunch was provided, but only a few of us ate it. We then headed to the food court, and you best believe most of us went straight for the chips. Overall, it was a chill and eye-opening experience that reminded us how powerful creativity can be.

RTO Training

Every Monday, we have sessions with Destiny, where we focus on technology and create PowerPoint presentations about transport. These classes help us build digital confidence and practical skills that will be useful for future work and study.

Try a Career

Every Wednesday, we have Julie’s “Try a Career” class. Recently, we worked on fun projects like building spaghetti tripods and bridges, which tested our teamwork and problem-solving skills.

We’ve also had interesting discussions about different career options, including AUSLAN (sign language), which has been both fun and educational.

Work Experience

Every Tuesday, we have been doing work experience in the warehouse, helping with QUEST chips duties. It’s been great hands-on experience. We have learned how to work efficiently, take responsibility, and be part of a productive team. Even though it can be hard work, it’s rewarding and helps build important workplace skills.
